Flocculant

A coagulating agent that causes fine particles suspended in sewage to clump together and settle.

This process, called flocculation, makes it possible to remove fine particles that cannot be easily separated through normal physical processes such as sedimentation and filtration.

Flocculants can be either organic or inorganic, with aluminum sulfate, ferric chloride, and PAC (polyaluminum chloride) being common inorganic types. Recently, however, organic synthetic polymer coagulants have become common.
