Glossary

Residual chlorine

Residual chlorine can refer to either free residual chlorine or combined residual chlorine.

Free residual chlorine refers to chemicals with strong disinfection results, such as hypochlorous acid (HClO) and hypochlorite ion (ClO-), while combined residual chlorine refers to chemicals combined with ammonia for a mild disinfecting effect.

Correct control of free residual chlorine concentration is necessary for water quality management such as with the water supply and pools.
