Chlorine dioxide

A type of disinfectant. Although this disinfectant includes chlorine in the name, disinfection is performed through the oxidative power of nascent oxygen.

Disinfection using chlorine dioxide does not produce harmful substances such as trihalomethane or MX, and the bactericidal activity is not influenced by fluctuations in the pH value, ammonia, and other factors. The residual property of chlorine dioxide also makes it a common choice for disinfection of tap water in some countries. Chlorine dioxide also boasts fast reactions in iron and manganese removal treatments. In Japan, the chemical has been approved by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare for pretreatment of tap water.

In recent years, chlorine dioxide has also been used to disinfect water in bathing facilities in order to prevent legionellosis.
