Customer's Needs and Problems

An organic solvent containing a photocatalyst is circulated through the system with a pump and is sprayed from a jet nozzle. This spray is irradiated with an ultraviolet laser beam for excitation and an X-ray laser beam for observation, and the movement of the atoms due to photochemical reactions is observed (the X-ray temporal resolution is measured).
Conventionally, a magnetic drive gear pump, a diaphragm pump, or a similar pump was used. The use of such a pump posed the following problems.

  • Certain elements within the liquid resulted in corrosion of the metal parts of the pump, occasionally leading to rusting.
  • Pulsations in the liquid flow decreased the quality of the observation data.
  • Precious sample solution is also used from time to time, so we want to perform tests using as little solution as possible.

TACMINA's Solutions

The customer decided to use a Q Series Smoothflow Pump.

  • We selected liquid-end materials that are highly resistant to organic solvents and that are equivalent to PTFE. The selection of these materials enabled long-term use without any corrosion.
  • Because the liquid can be transferred with a continuous, stable flow in which pulsations are suppressed, accurate observation data can be acquired.
  • The dead space within the pump head is minimized and there is no need for priming, so tests can be performed with a small amount of sample solution.
